Principal’s Message

Welcome to Katherine South Primary School

As a school of choice for families in our area, KSPS is an inclusive learning community that works together to achieve the best possible learning outcomes for our students. We promote our core values to the school community and foster these in our students. Our values of Community, Achievement, Respect and Engagement are evident as we strive for excellence, equity and a strong sense of community.

At Katherine South we believe a diverse learning community strengthens all aspects of our school, enriches the lives of the people in our community, and better prepares our students to live in a global world. ALL of our students have their own story, their own strengths and their own contributions to make to our school community. We accept and value involvement from a wide variety of sources while actively cultivating welcoming learning environments. Our aim is for our students to learn alongside and with one another.

Our focus is on quality explicit teaching and learning of the Australian Curriculum; we are conscious of learning for the 21st Century and incorporate the fluencies, skills and global understandings into all we do. We strive to ensure all of our students have a variety of opportunities to grow, experience success and shine.

KSPS enjoys an excellent reputation in the region; we have a tradition of achievement in academic, cultural, performing arts and sporting activities.

KSPS promotes parent and community involvement across the school. We are on a continual journey of school improvement which ensures our learning programs maintain their high standard and we do this with your input and support. The strong school spirit and collaboration make Katherine South Primary School a great place to learn and work.

Our History

Katherine South Primary School is situated on Riverbank Drive in the town of Katherine, in the Northern Territory of Australia.

The school was opened in 1976 in makeshift accommodation at the Katherine Showgrounds. Demount-able classrooms were provided in the middle of that year on the southern side of the oval while building went ahead on the present site. The late Les Macfarlane, then Member for Elsey, officially opened the permanent school buildings on 14 September 1979.

The school is semi open plan. It features separate buildings connected by covered walkways surrounding grassed play areas. The grounds are spacious and provide pleasant shady areas for outdoor activities. The school is fully air-conditioned.

Katherine South is attended by approximately 400 children which includes our 2 Preschools, Katherine South Preschool and Tindal Preschool, up to Year 6.
