KSPS supports students to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. Teaching and learning is centered on the Australian Curriculum, we offer the traditional core subjects of English, Mathematics, HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences), Health and Physical Education. A specialist STEAM program integrating Science, Technology and the Arts is provided for Years T-6. Our students’ education is further enhanced with many co-curricular activities that broaden learning opportunities and experiences.
Literacy
The teaching of English and Literacy is a priority at KSPS. Our T-2 students participate in the Read Write Inc. Program to begin their literacy learning. In these Early Years there is a focus on developing oral language – increasing vocabulary and speaking in full sentences; and phonics – being able to stretch words out to identify each sound and blending sounds together to make words.
After graduating Read Write Inc, students engage with a range of explicit literacy tasks to build fluent, accurate and expressive speakers, readers and writers. Ours students are equipped with a range of strategies they can use to fully understand spoken and written text.
Numeracy
At KSPS maths skills are taught explicitly in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability using real life experiences and understandings as a base. Through our classroom based Mathematics program students develop their capacity in four proficiency areas of numeracy – understanding, problem solving, fluency and reasoning. Students then apply these skills to solve open-ended problems. Understanding the problem and deciding on the best strategy to solve the problem is developing our students as mathematical thinkers.
Opportunities to draw upon and apply these numeracy skills are incorporated into other areas of the curriculum through an inquiry learning approach in STEAM and HASS.
S.T.E.A.M
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) are taught at all year levels at Katherine South Primary School by Specialist Teachers. STEAM is the process of students engaging with various elements of the curriculum to achieve an outcome. This enables our students to explore their risk taking skills, engage in experimental learning, focus on expanding their problem solving skills, expand their communication skills and be creative. Our students are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
